Entering its third decades of operation, PT Smelting continues to strengthen its commitment on environmental conservation through Mangrove Conservation Program 'Pesisir Lestari' in Randuboto Village, Sidayu Subdistrict, Gresik Regency.
The program began with the planting of 10,000 mangrove trees as a first step towards the target of 30,000 mangrove trees as marking PT Smelting’s 30 years Journey. This long-term conservation program themed Pesisir Lestari is not only planting mangroves but also monitoring mangrove survival rates and growth, maintaining and rehabilitating the areas, educating and empowering the community, and expanding the planting efforts in the following year.
The Kick-Off event for the “Pesisir Lestari” Conservation Mangrove program was attended by PT Smelting President Director Dharma Djojonegoro and the Board of Directors, Gresik Regent Fandi Akhmad Yani, members of the Gresik Regency Forkopimda, strategic local government officials, the Sidayu Subdistrict Forkopimcam, as well as representatives from schools, the PT Smelting employee community, and the surrounding community.
"Today's planting event is not just about planting trees, but an investment for the future of environment and community. Every mangrove that we plant brings hope that the Gresik coastline will remain sustainable, provide benefits for the community, and become legacy for the future generations," said Dharma.
In addition to environmental conservation, Pesisir Lestari Conservation Program also makes the community as the core of its sustainability initiative. PT Smelting involves the local community to taking part in conservation efforts as well as promoting economic empowerment by providing opportunities for Gresik's local SMEs to showcase their flagship products.
Appreciation was also expressed by Gresik Regent, Fandi Akhmad Yani, "On behalf of Gresik Regency Government, I would like to express my appreciation to PT Smelting for demonstrating real concern and commitment to environmental conservation in Gresik Regency. We hope for a sustainable impact. Poverty in coastal areas, particularly among fisherman, can continuously decline and their prosperity may improve. Through their fish catches, they can earn a daily income supported by the presence of these mangrove forests."
The joint commitment for this conservation program was also marked by a Green Commitment ceremony, symbolizing the shared vision of stakeholders in protecting the Gresik coastline.
