Sustainability Management Program
Conservation of Javan Hawk (Nisaetus Bartelsi)
Since 2018, PT Smelting has focused on conservation efforts for endangered species through an ex-situ breeding and release program for the Javan Hawk-eagle, a priority species listed by the IUCN as endangered by the Indonesian government. The Javan Hawk-eagle is endemic to Java and is synonymous with the national symbol, the Garuda Pancasila. In its natural habitat, this species faces difficulties in breeding, leading to a population decline.
To this end, PT Smelting has undertaken sustainable conservation efforts, from breeding to the release of young Javan Hawk-eagles into the wild. By 2024, this program will have added eight individuals to the total Javan Hawk-eagle population. One young Javan Hawk-eagle from the breeding program was released into the wild in early 2023. Jelita, the eagle's name, was also equipped with a GPS collar for post-release monitoring. This was the first of its kind in the world. In addition to conservation efforts, research on sound (bioacoustics) and behavior has been conducted and published in scientific journals and books. Javan hawk-eagle awareness campaigns are also frequently held to encourage public participation in protecting the Javan hawk-eagle's habitat. To facilitate the dissemination of information and education on Javan hawk-eagle conservation, the company published Elja, a children's storybook, in 2023. The other two books are Jelita (2024) and Studi Vokalisasi (2025).
For the company's commitment to conservation efforts, particularly for the Javan hawk-eagle, PT Smelting received recognition from the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Ir. Siti Nurbaya, for its consistent commitment to sustainable wildlife protection.

Komodo Dragon Release
To demonstrate PT Smelting's ongoing commitment and efforts to protect Indonesia's biodiversity, since 2022, PT Smelting has been collaborating with conservation institutions for "Ora Kole Beo," or "Komodo Returns Home." This program supports the government's efforts to increase the population of the endangered Komodo dragon. It connects conservation activities at conservation institutions (eksitu) and its activities to support conservation in the wild (insitu) by returning them to their natural habitat.
Coinciding with National Nature Conservation Day (HKAN) in October 2023, six juvenile Komodo dragons were returned to their natural habitat in the Wae Wuul Nature Reserve, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). These Komodo dragons underwent a selection process for physical excellence and a lengthy habituation process, ultimately determining their readiness to survive in the wild. GPS trackers were also installed on the six Komodo dragons for post-release monitoring, ensuring their continued adaptation to their natural habitat. This collaboration is a pentahelix collaboration between the government, the private sector, conservation institutions, and universities to protect the Komodo population in its natural habitat.

Insemination of Javanese Bulls and Balinese Cows
In the spirit of supporting national food security for meat supplies, while aligning with scientific developments and conservation efforts, PT Smelting has collaborated with the Conservation Institute on a bioprospecting program, "Javanese Banteng Insemination to Balinese Cattle," since 2022. This program was initiated out of concern for the endangered Javanese banteng and the deteriorating quality of Balinese cattle due to environmental factors and inbreeding. This innovation has restored good genes to improve the quality of cattle, increasing them to 1.5 times their normal size.
PT Smelting also established a Gamete Storage and Reproductive Research Center to store frozen semen from banteng and other endangered animals. This lab also serves as a special interest education center for studying conservation and genetic preservation efforts. This activity became the forerunner of a community empowerment program for farmer groups, promoting integrated and sustainable superior cattle breeding, producing superior quality cattle.

Mangrove Conservation
To improve ecosystems, particularly coastal ecosystems, PT Smelting has implemented a mangrove conservation program since 2014 by planting 5 hectares of mangroves in the Leweyan River delta, a tributary of the Bengawan Solo River, in Pangkah Kulon Village, Gresik. The mangrove area in Ujung Pangkah serves as a transit point for migratory birds from Australia during their wintering in their native habitat. The upper and lower parts of mangrove trees store carbon in the form of biomass, which is useful for mitigating climate change and the impacts of global warming. Furthermore, mangrove forests can also help achieve several targets in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Some of the mangrove species planted include Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizopora bruguera, and Rhizophora apicula, with an average tree height of 3 meters. To monitor mangrove development, PT Smelting has also established a monitoring post.
In May 2021, PT Smelting received an award from the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) in the category "Concern for Mangrove Conservation in Gresik Regency since 2014".
