Third Year of the Pelajar Tangguh Program PT Smelting’s Investment for Gresik Future

Education is a key to better future, a belief that PT Smelting continues to uphold through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in education aspect. Since 2023, PT Smelting has implemented the Pelajar Tangguh (Resilient Students) program, an initiative that not only provides financial support but also to develop students’ character and skills to prepare them for any challenge, from social interaction within their communities or for their professional career.

In 2025, PT Smelting is distributing scholarships worth a total of IDR 300 million to 25 vocational high school students from seven schools in Gresik Regency. The funds are allocated for both education expenses and training. Each student receives IDR 500,000 per month; an increase of IDR 150,000 compared to the first and second years. Beside finance support, students also benefit from 1-year mentoring, leadership training, and to run social projects (teamwork) and public speaking skills.

Ceremony of Third Year of Pelajar Tangguh Program was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Manyar on September 20, 2025 that attended by Student of Pelajar Tangguh Program, accompanying teachers, and Dr. Kiswanto, S.Pd., M.Pd., Head of the Regional Education Department for Gresik Regency.

In his speech, Dr. Kiswanto expressed his appreciation to PT Smelting for its contribution to education in Gresik.

“Thank you to PT Smelting for supporting students in Gresik Regency. So, all students will continue to study, maintain their health, and grow into resilient individuals. With such determination, we hope the Pelajar Tangguh students will be able to continue their education at the university level, because education is the key to changing one’s destiny.”

PT Smelting’s Commitment for Education as a fundamental aspect that deserves special attention. According to Bouman Tiroi Situmorang, Assistant Department Manager of Governmental & External Affairs at PT Smelting, “PT Smelting believes that education is the most effective way to break the cycle poverty. In addition to the Pelajar Tangguh program, we also run initiatives such as Industri Mengajar (Industry Teaching) and equipment donation for schools through this program, PT Smelting ensures that its contributions are felt not only within the industrial sector but also by the wider community, particularly in nurturing an excellent young generation.”

Voices from the Scholarship Recipients

More than just a program, Pelajar Tangguh is a life-changing experience for the students selected as recipients. Zikral Rabbani Sosiawan, a student from State Senior High School 1 Manyar and one of the Pelajar Tangguh scholarship awardees, shared his personal journey. 

"I’ve gained so many benefits, not only financially but also in terms of learning, social interaction, and community awareness. PT Smelting’s program what I can get from formal education. we also run social projects collaboratively with all 25 Pelajar Tangguh Students. Each month, we’re challenged to become better individuals, from improving public speaking and teamwork to taking on leadership roles.

Thanks to this program, the fears and self-doubt I used to have are now gone. I hope this program will continue so that younger students can also benefit from the Pelajar Tangguh scholarship.”

Zikral’s story is a powerful reflection of how this scholarship goes beyond financial support, it helps build strong character and confidence among students.

Pelajar Tangguh Program, more than just a scholarship, behind it has objective a long-term social investment. Pelajar Tangguh is designed to prepare the younger generation to be not only academically capable but also resilient in facing life’s challenges.

By combining financial assistance, soft skills training, and involvement in social projects, the program offers a holistic learning experience.
