For the second time, 49 students of Gajah Mada University (UGM) participated in the Zooforia program (Zoo Adventure Focusing on Wildlife Conservation Activity) on September 20, 2025, after last year UGM students participated in a similar program. Last month, Veterinary Students from Brawijaya University also visited the Research Centre facility.
This program is a learning for veterinary students to enrichment practice and monitoring activities of animal health as well as visiting the Gamet Storage Centre and Reproductive Research Laboratory, which was built by PT Smelting in collaboration with the Safari Park Conservation Institute.
The Research Centre is very meaningful for the conservation of the Javan Bull which is experiencing a decline in population as well as this facility can utilize the germplasm of Javan Bull semen for the purpose of genetic revitalization of Bali cattle by artificial insemination (IB). As is known that the Javan Bull is the elder of the Bali Cow, so it is hoped that the performance of the Bali Cow will be better just like its ancestors.
Before the field visit, the PT Smelting gave a presentation on the company's efforts in the conservation of endangered animals represented by Sapto Hadi Prayetno, as Senior Manager of General Affairs. In his presentation that the company will continue to contribute to conservation efforts, one of the programs is establishment of a research facility built on TSI Prigen land, which is not only for saving Javan bull semen but can be used for research and storing semen for other animals in a sustainable manner.
“I hope that the students get new insights from this visit, when you are graduate, not only working in a pet shop or company, but more than that you can apply knowledge to participate in conservation efforts and other germplasm research for the benefit of humanity, because we know that Indonesia has the 2nd largest source of biodiversity in the world," said Sapto in his message.
By learning visits from several national university, showing the role of PT Smelting in education to the community can continue to be carried out as a form of awareness of the importance of saving Indonesia's endemic fauna so that it does not become extinct and useful for human life. (SHP)
