ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

Mangrove Conservation

Since 2014, PT. Smelting conducted a Mangrove Tree planting program in Pangkah Kulon Village, Ujung Pangkah District. Mangrove trees planted by PT. Smelting as many as 40,300 Mangrove trees from Rhizopora Mucronata, Rhizopora Apiculata, Rhizopora Bruguera. This program is implemented until 2018 in accordance with the strategic plan for biodiversity protection of PT. Smelting, and based on official recommendations from the Environmental Agency of the Gresik Regency Government..

The Mangrove conservation program was designed from the collaboration of the wishes of the people of Pangkah Kulon Village with PT. Smelting. In order to obtain data about the environmental baseline in the Mangrove conservation area, PT. Smelting through Airlangga University LPPM, Surabaya in 2015. And currently PT. Smelting has also begun to build monitoring posts and bridge to monitor Mangrove trees and also in the future will be used as an eco-tourism place for mangroves.

The implementation of the mangrove conservation program involves the active participation of fishermen groups through the POKMASWAS SARI LAUT (Supervisory Community Group) so that fishermen are expected to help maintain the preservation of mangroves that have been planted. With the breeding program and planting of Mangrove Trees, there is now a shift in mindset of the fishermen in Pangkah Kulon Village about the importance of preserving the mangrove ecosystem towards the sustainability of their main livelihoods as fishermen, considering their catches are more varied since mangroves grow with well, thus inviting marine biota to breed there, such as mangrove crabs, keting fish, glodog fish and mullet fish.

Since the mangrove conservation program was rolled out in 2014 to 2018, the total number of mangrove trees that have been planted is 40,300 with a land area of around 4 hectares in the estuary area of the Bengawan Solo River, Pangkah Kulon Village, Ujung Pangkah Subdistrict, Gresik.

Conservation of Javan Hawk-eagle (Nisaetus Bartelsi)

PT. Smelting carried out a conservation program for Javan Hawk-eagle (Nisaetus Bartelsi) at Taman Safari I, Cisarua, Bogor. This program began on April 28, 2018. This program was carried out in collaboration with Taman Safari I Cisarua, Bogor. The selection of Javan Hawk-eagle species is based on the consideration that the Javan Hawk-eagle population is very alarming. The population of Javan Hawk-eagle in the wild is estimated to be only 600. Based on the latest threat criteria from the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources), Javan Hawk-eagle is included in the Endangered or "Critical" category (Collar et al., 1994, Shannaz et al., 1995). Through Presidential Decree No. 4 of 1993 concerning National Animals and Flowers, the Government of Indonesia confirmed the Javan Hawk Eagle as a representative of aerospace-endangered animals. The Javan eagle is identical to the Garuda Bird symbol as the symbol of the Indonesian State.

The Javan Eagle Hawk conservation program is designed with an ex-situ breeding method for 3 years housed in Taman Safari Indonesia 1 Cisarua, then in the 4th and 5th years will be released to its habitat with the main choices in the area around Cisarua Safari Park.

The implementation of the Javan Hawk-eagle conservation program is specific so that it requires parties who have competence in the field of preservation of endangered animals. In this case, Taman Safari Indonesia 1 Cisarua Bogor. This program was well received by Taman Safari Indonesia because this institution does have a vision and mission.

The Javan Hawk Eagle Conservation Program has a target of increasing the population, breeding and animal protection in order to contribute more value to the environment.
